Volunteers are a vital part of Urban Shield. In 2011, nearly 4,000 volunteers participated in Urban Shield in a variety of ways. We anticipate the need for more in 2012. Here are some of the positions and roles that are filled by volunteers:
All volunteers, vendors, observers, medical teams and agency personnel are required to submit an application in order to participate in Urban Shield 2012. The application is now available on the Urban Shield web site at www.urbanshield.org Please select the Become a Volunteer section of the page and then select the red Volunteer Now. All employees of law enforcement agencies, fire departments or emergency medical services should submit the Law/Fire/EMS Application.
If you are not an employee of law enforcement, fire department or emergency medical services, you should submit the General Application.
Urban Shield 2012 is scheduled for the weekend of October 26th through October 29th, 2012.
Role Players – You can play a terrorist, a hostage, or the victim of a mass casualty, just to name a few of the roles played last year.
Logistics – An event the size of Urban Shield needs many support personnel for data entry, supply, equipment, and information tracking.
Communications – Dispatchers, Ham Radio operators and information technology support are the infrastructure that link Urban Shield sites and first responders.
Final Event Assistance – Banquet planning, setup and implementation at the Oakland Marriott.
Vendor Show – Setup and implementation at the Oakland Marriott.
Emergency Operations Center (Dublin, CA) – Clerical and logistical support for the four operational periods. This is where the decisions making for the multi-layered training exercise takes place.
Check-In Day, Friday, October 26, 2012 – Tactical teams arrive and for their initial orientation while vendors and VIPs arrive to tour the facilities and the Technology Tent.
